Born in Franconia, the artist Brigitta Westphal was living in the Frankfurt area for along time. In recent years she has changed the center of her live between her Franconian homeland and southern Tuscany. Man and nature stand as main subjects in the center of her oeuvre. Therefore, her individual focus deriving from subjective biographical elements forms the artist’s works. The encounter with Robert Musil’s novel “The Man without Qualities” was a crucial experience. Inspired from the tense affinity to this poet, Brigitta Westphal produced two cycles of 14 oil paintings each. These became step stones in her artistic development. Since 1986, transferring world literature into adequate picturesque works is a special challenge to the artist. “Brigitta Westphal’s oil paintings, mixed techniques and etchings are mysteries of color, form and structure, surrealistic pictures of a transboundary floating between awareness and dreams.” the Fränkische Landeszeitung described the artist’s works. Disruptions between the work periods, due to changing live situations, left marks in the artist oeuvre. Graphic art stands equal next to her painting. Brigitta Westphal gained teaching experiences in these areas. In 1982 she founded the etching class at the Kronberg painting school where she taught for four years.
