Lives and Works in Australia    
   

Noela Hjorth, printmaker, painter and sculptor, was born and studied in Melbourne, Australia, and trained at Chelsea Art School in London. In Australia, her works are in the National Gallery, Canberra, in all State and many regional galleries. She has had 30 one-person exhibitions in Australia and overseas and has been included in numerous group exhibitions. Recently a work was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK, and placed on exhibition in 1992 /93. She has been cited in numerous reviews and in significant collective works on art and artists such as Pat Gilmour’s Lasting Impressions, Australian National Gallery, 1988, Alan McCulloch’s Encyclopedia of Australian Art Hutchinson Group, 1992. Two monographs on her life and work have been published: the first by Vicki Pauli and Judith Rodriguez, Noela Hjorth, Granrott Press, South Australia, 1984; and the second, a substantial book of 191 pages illustrated largely in color, Noela Hjorth -Journey of a Fire Goddess, Craftsman House, Sidney, 1989. She has recently completed a video production on the process of her work with its philosophical background. Her 1994 exhibitions included retrospective works and recent sculptures at St Peter’s Cathedral in conjunction with the Adelaide Festival, with subsequent exhibitions at the Greenaway Art Gallery, Kent Town, South Australia and the Melbourne Contemporary Art Gallery, Victoria.

- 1958-59 Full-time Art studies at Prahran Institute of Technology (Victoria College).
- 1960-63 Studied at Royal Melbourne institute of Technology.
- 1968-71 Worked in London. Studied at Chelsea School of Art. Traveled through Europe.
- 1972-76 Returned to Australia and established own studio. Lectured part-time at Caulfield Institute of Technology. Established the Victorian Printmakers’ Group and Australian Print Workshop.
- Elected Vice-President of the Print Council of Australia.
- 1980-94 Artist in residence at Riverina College of Advanced Education, Wagga Wagga, NSW.
- Traveled to India, Thailand and Indonesia. Visited Bali and the gathering of - Aboriginal communities on Groote Eylandt for special projects on dance and ceremonial festivals.
- Large constructions were based on images inspired by visits to Northern Australia and Ayres Rock and the Olgas in Central Australia. Research work in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Japan.
- 1994-2000 Four installations from Sophia’s Sacred Cycle including “Seeds, Roots, Shoots and Trees” in Cathedrals and Churches in Adelaide, South Australia.
- Currently Living and working in Clarendon, South Australia.

1970-2000. Thirty-three solo exhibitions in London, UK, Thailand, and all Australian States and Territories.

Twenty five Selected Group Exhibitions in London, UK, New York, and all Australian States and Territories, including the Australian National Galley, Canberra.

Represented in many collections including Australian National Gallery, National Gallery of Victoria, State Galleries of New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, Queens land, Tasmania and Northern Territory.
