Abraham Lucki’s work is a constant research of the world around him,
of the scenery that has molded his life. He wants to understand the
area, which is not his birthplace. He searched for the essence of
things and his paintings became more and more abstract. Large canvases
with rather monochromatic paint laid on them: Shades of brown, burnt
sienna, a huge yellow patch and a little green. The yellow patch is
the sun, which shines the whole year round in the desert area where
Lucki lives. The browns are the color of the earth and the green -
spots of vegetation, mainly man-made. The research continued. Colored,
textured lines with tactile presence, took the place of the patches.
Each line has its own meaning, a kind of landscape logo. The paintings
are small: asymmetric arches depict the hills surrounding his home, a
lone, straight line is a road crossing the land, lines that crisscross
might illustrate the desert and, surely, parallel lines are furrows.
The forms repeat themselves in various shapes, in keeping with the
symbols and their meaning, but also with an eye on aesthetic aspects.

In
the next layer of Abraham Lucki’s work, the ‘logo’ was executed on
large canvases, while still searching for the essence of the place.
Using the same symbolic lines and colors on a big scale changed the
character of the paintings. In the small paintings, the colors and
lines fade into the paper. In the large ones all the surface is
utilized. Every line, every spot proclaimed their presence. It is
curious how a few lines and patches of color achieve such physical
depth. The answer is in the color, its texture and in the technique
used. Lucki uses dissolved pigments of translucent, colored lacquer.
The secret is double: Different levels of dilution of the color and
manipulation of the layers. The result is a variety of shiny or dull,
opaque to transparent colors. The textures also vary, sometimes just a
color, others, a real, tactile object. In his present work Abraham
Lucki has combined the large canvases with the abstract ‘Landscape
Logo’ symbols together with elements of his artistic work in the past.
On a background of rectangular patches that are interlace with the
dynamic desert hued ‘logo’ lines, he has painted in thin lines a
Bedouin tent, an ancient ruin, a local building and other realistic
elements. He has added a blue spot, a clear-sky blue patch that hasn’t
appeared before in his paintings. The paintings in this catalogue are
indication of the outcome of the search, and a promise of things to
come. ( Chavi Feingold, Art Curator )
