I
have long been intrigued with mosaic, which derives from a basic
desire for order and decoration. From simple geometric patterns to
intricate motifs, the design possibilities for mosaics are endless. The
symmetry and geometric patterns implicit in the pieces shown reflect
this tradition. The intent is to create works which result in an
aesthetic and cohesive whole. Created from wood blocks, wood pieces
and ceramic tiles, a unique type of mosaic sculpture has been
developed by the artist. Once bonded, the pieces are then painted with
enamel as a final, important step. The result is a new and unique
style which collectively has been named MOSAIXWORX for identification
and reference purposes. The artist works out of his Albany, New York
studio and has rendered a collection of masks, mosaics and mirrors
using a mixed-media technique, where adhesion is made to each
component rather than into a prepared ground, resulting in a smooth
surface distinguished from the more typical, uneven mosaic surface.
These works are a recent departure for the artist, who exhibited
modernist paintings in local galleries in the 1980’s. S. R. Berman is
an adjunct faculty member of the State University of New York Empire
State College, located in Saratoga Springs, New York. |
